What is hypnosis, exactly?
Unfortunately, few procedures are less understood, or more plagued by misconceptions and distortions. Before considering what hypnosis is, perhaps it would be appropriate to establish what it is not!
Hypnosis is not sleep, nor is it a surrender of mental powers, nor unconsciousness. There is no loss of control. A person who does not want to be hypnotized cannot be. Nor can anyone be induced to do or say anything that violates personal standards of behavior or integrity.

Ok, so if hypnosis is not mind-control, what is it?
Hypnosis is a means of communication between the conscious mind and the unconscious mind. Many human problems, habits, stresses, fears, attitudes or apparent deficiencies can be traced to interpretations by the unconscious mind which, when understood by the conscious mind, can reduce or resolve specific problems. If you substitute the phrase "deep relaxation" for hypnosis, you get a good sense of what hypnosis is.

What happens during a hypnosis session?
The first portion you will learn about hypnosis and become comfortable with the idea. The next few minutes of the session will be for discussing how hypnosis can help you accomplish your goals. During the last 45 minutes of the session you will be relaxed in a comfortable recliner with your eyes closed. At this time you and your hypnotist will work together to help you fully achieve your goal. Usually a first session is about 90 minutes. Any subsequent sessions are about an hour. You must sincerely want the change in order for your unconscious mind to accept the suggestions. If a significant other is the reason you are seeking help, and you don’t want the change, hypnosis will not work because your unconscious mind will reject suggestions.

What can hypnosis do for me?
It depends on what you need help with. Hypnosis is most commonly used to quit smoking, lose weight, end unwarranted fears, and reduce stress. It is also very effective for improving sports focus and scores, eliminating insomnia, and increasing learning during study.

What are the medical benefits of hypnosis?
A 1996 National Institutes of Health technology assessment panel judged hypnosis to be an effective intervention for alleviating pain from cancer and other chronic conditions. Voluminous clinical studies also indicate that hypnosis can reduce the acute pain experienced by patients undergoing burn-wound debridement, children enduring bone marrow aspirations and women in labor. A meta-analysis published in a recent special issue of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, for example, found that hypnotic suggestions relieved the pain of 75 percent of 933 subjects participating in 27 different experiments. The pain-relieving effect of hypnosis is often substantial, and in a few cases the degree of relief matches or exceeds that provided by morphine.
